Anti-Mother's Day Gifts

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson

Subtitle this, "Books NOT to Give Mom on Mother's Day."

Both books are intense, well-written childhood memoirs where mothers (foster/Winterson and biological/Bechdel) figure prominently and not in such a good way. Both gifted and, incidentally, lesbian daughters will end up in counseling as adults and eventually reach an equilibrium, but it's a long time coming.

Well, I guess you could give them to Mom but pick a day other than Mother's Day. Just sayin'.
